This is a great movie and a serious movie for adults. I think the bad ratings come only from those audience members who constantly want "escape" rather than deepening. I think Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are in top form here, and Kathy Bates and Michael Shannon are terrific in supporting roles.
There isn't a single scene or moment that rings false. It's not a nice holiday movie, but a tragedy very well-observed by Sam Mendes.
