Review of Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie (1999) by Mary G — 13 Feb 2008

The Utena movie is based on the Adolescence of Utena manga - in many ways, it's a condensed version of the TV series - but it's also an alternate universe (there are some big differences with some of the characters - but telling would be a spoiler! ^_-).

A lot of people think Utena is complicated; but it's not - it's just deep. You actually have to listen to what the characters are saying, what they're NOT saying - and also take note of the action and backgrounds (the Shadow theatre girls for example, give important clues if you're paying attention).

It's a great film - and like the series, it's open minded - going for love, honour and beliefs transcending the barriers society have placed on roles played according to gender.
