Review of Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978) by Private U — 17 Jun 2008
Not So Good.
I agree that Sellers is a comic genius and the Pink Panther films are as a set a definite classic. But this installment really isn't that great. It follows in the tradition of the previous films but just didn't seem to match up to them. It really didn't have a lot of zany laughs, the plot was lame and I didn't think setting it in Hong Kong added anything, and even Sellers seemed to look tired. The best line was when Sellers as Clouseau asks in a muddled way to the blonde 'He killed a transvestite just to impress his godfather?' Cato in milk-bottle glasses was just annoying; why wouldn't he just take them off if he couldn't see? But then afterwards I realised he reminded me of one the characters in the ?Once Upon China? films, which is funny (by the way they?re well worth seeing).
Anyway rent this if you're going to see the whole Pink Panther collection but be aware, the earlier films are much, much better. And in my opinion if you really want to enjoy Sellers comic genius in a worthy film you could do no worse than rent ?The Party?.
