Review of Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978) by Danielle K — 12 May 2009
The 6th Pink Panther film made, and the last to star Peter Sellers, (Trail of the Pink Panther (1982) was made up of outtakes.) This was the last good film of the series before all the tired and pointless sequels.
But, even in this one, there's signs of weakness in this one, it does have it's laughs, but they're not a frequent as the films before it. This one is essentially a spoof of The French Connection.
It has powerful French gangster Philippe Douvier (Robert Webber) proving to his American counterparts that he's still powerful by plotting to kill Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Sellers), soon Clouseau's car is shot off the road and it looks like he's dead.
But, Clouseau is not dead, and he, Douvier's mistress/secretary Simone Legree (Dyan Cannon) and Cato (Burt Kwouk) fly out to Hong Kong, where Douvier and the French Crime syndicate are meeting with the Americans, to solve the mystery and bring down the drugs syndicate.
It's well made, and it is funny, (Clouseau dressing up as Toulouse Lautrec, a Swedish Sailor and The Godfather are highlights), but it could have been better, but when it's funny, it is very good.
However, it was all downhill from here after this, it was a last hurrah in a way.
