Review of Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008) by Hamel G — 20 Nov 2008
After nearly three decades 1983 cult fave Sleepaway Camp finally gets a sequel. The result is a downright bizarre slasher that has cult-appeal written all over it. Original director Robert Hiltzik returns and it's nice to see him steering away from the glossy look many recent slashers are suffering from.
In fact it looks like this movie was made back in the eighties. Of course there isn't much of a story - kids bullying the bully and therefore getting slaughtered - but director Hiltzik created a nice homage to the original movie.
Intentionally bad acting, very creative murders and even a little bit more suspense than in the first movie, all lead up to a satisfying little slasher. It was clearly a labour of love for everyone involved.
And although I immediately figured out who the killer was, I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Fangoria magazine gave it a bad review. Well shame on you guys!
