Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Edward B — 21 Oct 2009
A frankly horrific re-imagining of Oz. Dorothy is being treated as a mental patient, the Emeral City has been decimated and the Lion and Tin-man have been turned to stone. I find it stunning that this film ever got made, considering the original, it's almost as if Danny from Grease grew up into Vincent Vega.
Ok, not quite that good, but Return to Oz is in the ball-park. Fairuza Balk offers a decent turn as Dorothy, and Jack Skellington turns up twenty years before Tim Burton invented him. This could have been perfect if not for the happy ending and the 'it's all a dream' undertones.
