Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Joseph L — 29 Jan 2011
Can we get something straight??? This film is NOT a sequel to the classic "Wizard of Oz"...but is an adaptation of three sequel novels by L. Frank Baum. I think this film receives too much heat for being a crappy sequel when it is not.
It is a faithful adaptation to the classic childrens books and is a work of art. The abscence of musical dance numbers gives the film a more realistic approach, and it's dark tone is perfect for older children who love thrills.
If Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" can become one of the biggest box office hits of the year, I don't understand how "Return to Oz" has been left behind in the darkness for few to see.
Fairuza Balk plays, in my opinion, the best representation of Dorothy Gale to ever hit the screen. Dorothy's new friends Tick-Tock, Jack Pumpkinhead, Billina, and the Gump are all interesting characters, and the Gnome King is a fascinating villian.
Rent this film to see for yourself!!! 4.5/5.
