Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Shane D — 21 May 2011
I rented this film heavily when I was a youngster. Upon reflection I always thought it was a poor effort and chalked up my over-hiring to a childlike acceptance of bad films. But casting an eye over it again here I realised that there is a lot to love and embrace about Return To Oz.
Firstly, its amazingly dark and disturbing. A lot more than any other kids film I can remember and as a result it should really appeal to Burton fans. Also, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion are nowhere to be seen.
The replacement characters are a little harder to warm to, but once you do, you can't help but almost prefer them to the original. The Wheelers always creeped me out as a kid and the sequence in Princess Mumba's chamber of heads stayed with me during many a dark night.
.. a really under-rated gem. Not for you kids, but well worth checking out yourself.
