Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Ryan V — 09 Feb 2012
This film, which is a composite of the first two sequels to the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, claims to be more loyal to the literary origins of Oz than the classic Judy Garland film. It pretty much is, aside from the disturbing sequence in a mental asylum that opens the film.
The main virtues of this picture, however, are in the remarkable visual effects and in Fairuza Balk's charming rendition of Dorothy. While not measuring up to either the books or Victor Fleming's bulletproof film, Return to Oz is a brave and remarkable achievement.
