Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Steven R — 02 Jan 2013
Back in the eighties, Disney was not afraid to take risks. This film was very controversial when it was released in 1985 for a number of reasons. One reason was that this film scared the crap out of most kids, and even freaked the parents out as well.
The folks at Disney were pretty much forced to pull it out of theatres only after a few weeks or so. It does open with Auntie Em taking Dorothy to a mental hospital to recieve shock therapy. How could you NOT want to watch that? With all of that being said, it is very dark, and from what I have heard, it is more faithful to the books by L.
Frank Baum. There are no musical numbers to be found here. Actually, most of it is very somber and depressing. It's a Disney film for adults, plain and simple.
