Review of Return to Horror High (1987) by Al M — 24 Jun 2011
Ten years before Wes Craven's Scream, Return to Horror High was a self-conscious, postmodern slasher film that plays with the genre conventions by having a film crew arrive at the high school location of a real-life massacre.
As the crew attempt to make a film about the killings, reality and fantasy becomes blurred as fictional scenes become indistinguishable from real killings. Return to Horror High is never actually intelligent or satirical in a meaningful way, but it is a fun parody of the genre that will continue to frustrate your expectations and make you laugh up until the end.
