Review of Return of the Living Dead III (1993) by Vince K — 06 Mar 2011
Curt Reynolds (J. Trevor Edmond) is the rebellious son of Col. John Reynolds (Kent McCord) of the U.S. Army, who is experimenting on dead human test subjects for warfare. When Curt's girlfriend Julie (Melinda Clarke) is killed in a motorcycle accident, he takes it upon himself to use the Trioxin gas that was used on the subjects in his father's lab, on her.
While Return of the Living Dead III shares the same name and Trioxin gas barrels like the last two "Living Dead" films, it's an altogether different story. Comedy has been replaced with a more serious approach to the genre, while incorporating a more romantic edge to the theme. The film centers around the love and bond of the two central characters of Curt and Julie, having Julie being the source of all the zombies being risen; while completely holding back on the killing of Curt. Director Brian Yuzna paints a nice portrait of love and tragedy, giving us some gruesome deaths along the way. The gore was rich in this outing, showing a very clever edge to the make-up effects department. Return of the Living Dead III is darker in tone and a great comeback to that of the world of George Romero's eighties "Dead" films.
