Review of Return of the Jedi (1983) by Nicolás T — 21 Jul 2014
Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi may be the weakest of the original trilogy, but it is a brilliant and entertaining sci-fi finale nonetheless. It has all the brilliant action, superb acting, and legendary storytelling that has made this one of the most famous franchises ever.
Mark Hamill gives the finest performance of the film, showing Luke to be fully evolved into a mature and brilliant Jedi. Its great to see how his development was perfectly executed for him to become the great hero who must bring down his father, Darth Vader.
Vader is a much more conflicted villain in this film, as he must fight not only his own son but himself as well. What really stands out is Ian McDiarmid as Darth Sidious, who brought true evil and poison into human form.
He is living darkness and evil, as well see his manipulation take its toll on Luke. Harrison Ford is once again flawless and badass as Han Solo, proving he was born to play such a legendary role. Everyone else gave teriffic performances that would be hard to miss.
Its a finale to a trilogy that has stood the test of time for a reason, and while not as good or dark as The Empire Strikes Back, its a masterpiece in its own different way. You would be heartless to not feel the intensity and gravity of the last act of this film, its truly one of the finest examples of epic cinema.
This was the end to an era, one that has shaped mine and millions of others lives around the world. I can't wait for Episode VII!
