Review of Return of the Jedi (1983) by Simon H — 27 Jul 2014
The final installment in the original trilogy is a solid addition, yet does have its minor issues. Like the previous episode, all the characters are back. There is not a huge amount of character development this time around as the characters are more focused on the missions. Ian McDiarmid appears as the Emperor in charge of Darth Vader and gives him a really sinister side. You really do believe that this old man is in charge of an entire empire. Jabba the Hutt is also one of the highlights of the film and is a fun character to watch. The Ewoks do have their fans but are a bit problematic.
The problem with the Ewoks are that they are essentially large teddy bears. There is nothing wrong with them as an actual species. The problem is with them is that they have the privilege of being the lucky ones to take down the Imperial Stormtroopers in the big finale. If the Imperials best men didn't look weak before, they sweep the floor with it now.
Whilst it does seem all new, the story is pretty much a repeat of Episode IV with parts of Episode V thrown in for good measure. A New Hope involved the Rebel Alliance destroying the Death Star. Return of the Jedi also involves the Rebel Alliance destroying the Death Star. They even destroy it in pretty much the exact same way. You would have thought that the Empire would have learnt from their mistakes the first time. There is even a quick visit to Yoda on Dagobah and a talk with the Obi Wan spirit thrown in for good measure.
The action sequences can't be faulted though. The final space battle is amazing to watch and you are sucked into the emotion of all characters in the 'now or never' scenario. John Williams also continues with his impressive Star Wars Saga score.
It might have its flaws, but Return of the Jedi is a fitting end to Anakin Skywalker's story.
