Review of Return of the Jedi (1983) by Richard L — 12 Apr 2015
Of the three original films, this is the one that most foreshadows the flaws of the prequels: too-cute characters, a plot that relies on character clumsiness, and mistaking epic scenes and effects for depth. The special edition effects make things even worse. Of course the alien toad that eats a bug must burp. Of course the CGI characters clutter up the scenes and provide nothing but a "cute" nod to the prequels. Of course the logic of ghostly Jedi must be thrown out so that a young Hayden Christensen can be placed. And of course "NOOOOO" must be layered in to create "symmetry" with the prequels.
Unlike the prequels, however, the acting remains almost as good as The Empire Strikes Back. The leads have their natural charm apart and together. These are the characters we grew to love, so they cannot help but remain endearing. There are also scenes when the emotions feel real and earned. I especially like the scenes between Luke and Darth Vader.
Although it is clear in Return of the Jedi what George Lucas would later emphasize in the prequels, there is fortunately still much of the first two movies in it. It is still Star Wars.
