Review of Return of the Jedi (1983) by T. R — 20 Dec 2015
The last of the original trilogy of Star Wars films, for many people this is also the weakest of the bunch. However, there's still plenty to like in here, including (but not limited to) the skirmish at the Sarlacc pit, the speeder bike chase through the forests of Endor, the (space) battle of Endor and Luke's brief flirtation with the Dark side (i.e. round two of Luke vs Vader!).
Some trivia: this is the first film in which Luke refers to Vader as Anakin Skywalker, or to Kenobi as Obi-Wan rather than as Ben. It's also the film in which Vader/Anakin fulfils the prophecy of 'bringing balance to the Force' first mentioned in Episode 1 (in the prequels, it was too far to the light side, but too far to the dark in these), and this is the only film in the original series in which we see Lightsabres in combat against anything other than another Lightsabre. In addition, the primitive warrior tribe in this film were originally intended to be Wookies - an idea later revisited in Episode III - rather than the small Ewoks, and Harrison Ford originally wanted Han Solo to sacrifice himself for his friends - an idea vetoed by Lucas.
