Review of Resurrecting the Champ (2007) by ?Ave S — 20 Jun 2009
I've been wanting to watch this movie for a while but somehow forgot about it. I'm glad I found it and put it on tonight. I knew it was based on a true story but didn't know what that story was.
So when the twist came I was unsuspecting. Sam Jackson was very very good. This is the first time in a long time where I didn't feel he was just a caricature of himself, in that same yelling / dominant speaking role he always seems to be cast as.
His performance was honest, reminding me of the one he gave in A Time to Kill. He gave a truly great performance. I also liked the casting of Alan Alda as Hartnett's boss. This story was inspiring at times, and disheartening at others.
It's a sad story but not in a depressing way. The director really allows you to become attached to the characters in the film. My only real gripe is with Kathryn Morris who I've never been able to find believable.
But even she isn't bad in this movie. In fact I would like to watch it again.
