Review of Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles (2011) by Paul B — 22 Feb 2012
One of the most remarkable documentaries I've seen in years. A true conundrum wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a mystery, we follow a man obsessed with an urban legend chase the object of his pursuit down the proverbial rabbit hole. He joins up with a couple of other similarly-obsessed people, and the trio (plus the filmmaker, which actually makes four,) begins to make headway on what.
TOYNBEE IDEA.
IN MOVIE '2001.
RESURRECT DEAD.
ON PLANET JUPITER.
Might actually mean. Because this enigmatic phrase has been showing up on hundreds and hundreds of tiles all over the eastern United States and down into South America. What's it all about? Who's doing this? And why?
This film could've been a modern-day Sherlock Holmes story - 'The Adventure of the Toynbee Tiles'. Or it could have been some sort of weird, David Lynchian, spooky sci-fi story, or perhaps an occult thriller... but instead is a recording of real events. A real puzzler cracked by real people out of real curiosity. People with curiosity about serious things in an otherwise mundane world would do well to check this little gem out. The game is afoot!
