Review of Restrepo (2010) by Sean P — 27 Feb 2011
All I can say is that I am speechless. This documentary is as powerful as it is intense. There is no way to truly describe the gut-wrenching power that this documentary creates and maintains from beginning to end. As the viewer you are thrown directly into the mind of the soldier and you begin to feel alongside them as they carry out their daily routine. The cutting from post-deployment interviews to being in Afghanistan only adds to the power that this documentary posses. To see someone so strong break down so easily is tear jerking, and at times I got chills and my entire body was given goose bumps. Fifteen months is cut down to 93 minutes and while that may not seem like much, you are given more than you can imagine. My already high respect level for soldiers has greatly increased and I know that what they do is beyond anything I can ever do. The documentary is presented in a way that not only do you begin to live by the soldiers, but you also begin to question your life and the amount of appreciation you have for it. By the end of the documentary you will not only be grateful for what these amazing men (and women, although there are no women in this specific documentary) do for this country, but you will also begin to appreciate your life more.
The true appreciation of this documentary comes from the gut-wrenching power and I tried my best to describe it but to truly understand, you must see this. Whether you are a fan of documentaries or not does not matter. This intense documentary is without a doubt Oscar worthy and deserves to win one.
THANK YOU to the brave men and women fighting around the world for making this world a much better place.
