This intensely visceral, mostly apolitical war documentary boasts all the hallmarks of excellent war fiction - wincing set-pieces and a touching bond between the soldiers - yet the fact that it is real, and strikingly depicted through unrelenting, often emotionally wrenching on-the-frontline footage, makes it one of the best war docs ever made.
