Review of Restrepo (2010) by Thor G — 07 Feb 2011
This documentary, up for an Oscar, follows one company for one year in the deadliest place in Afghanistan. It shows the true comradarie within this company as they take a strategic point in the valley and then hold it.
The film crew was there, for the battles, the deaths, the joy and the sorrow. There is no political angle here. It's about the soldiers, what they endure day in and day out. And these soldiers...are kids.
All of them look like kids...except when you look in their eyes. The change in the look in their eyes from the beginning of the movie to the end, for me, was striking. Enduring daily gun battles, constantly understanding that at any moment your time was up.
..to see friends get injured and some dying...you can see it in their eyes. And honestly, I don't know that it ever disappears...whether they want it to or not.
