Review of Restrepo (2010) by Forrest K — 22 Feb 2011
Fascinating on-the-ground look at everyday life for an American soldier. It was especially interesting to me, as I know so little about the campaign in Afghanistan. The feeling of claustrophobia and paranoia is palpable, and it's refreshing to see soldiers presented as people and peers, not treated as archetypes or superhumans.
I did feel an indistinct something was missing, possibly a stronger emotional hook or greater context for the situation as a whole. But as a primary document in a largely unpublicized war, Restrepo is vital viewing.
