Review of Restrepo (2010) by Nicole R — 01 Mar 2011
This is a documentary about soldiers in Afghanistan that has received almost universal acclaim this past year for its raw look into the day to day lives of soldiers stuck in a deadly valley there. For me, Restrepo didn't work that well.
The film sticks to a doggedly apolitical tone, and it suffers from a lack of context. The viewer is meant to focus on the men themselves, but fixing a camera on people without a clear POV or intent other than capturing the moment leaves the film adrift, with no narrative force, and puts a remove between the viewer and the men, rather than bringing the viewer in.
An admirable effort, but not nearly the masterpiece I hoped it would be.
