Review of Restrepo (2010) by Jeff S — 13 Apr 2011
Considering the fact that this film won an award at the Sundance Film Festival, the story falls short of what I would expect. The first eight minutes or so are pretty good - we're driving to Kornegal and all of a sudden an explosion rocks the vehicle giving the sense that 'you-are-there'.
After the first few minutes, however, the film ceases to have any real feeling. Restrepo along with other soldiers die but the problem is that we as the audience are never really introduced to them and when they die there is no real emotional connection.
Furthermore, we are told that Kornegal is one of the worst places to be in the war but we are never told what their objective is and no real progress is made on the part of the soldiers throughout the film.
I'm giving the film 4/5 stars only because it satisfies its tagline "One platoon. One Valley. One year." Unfortunately it satisfies very little else.
