Review of Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) by Zee M — 25 Mar 2011
This third installment of the Resident Evil franchise takes place five years after its predecessor. Alice is separated from Carlos, Jill, LJ and Angela and living on the road, a vagabond in the desert. The T-Virus was not "sanitized" as hoped in Raccoon City, but continued to spread, turning Earth into a planetary wasteland in a short amount of time.
This installment had a sort of Mad Max feel, what-if-the-Earth-blew vibe. The fight scenes weren't as outrageous as "Nemesis" which I liked, and I loved Milla Jovovich's outfit, though I deducted points for practicality. I was sad Jill wasn't in this installment, but happy to see Claire Valentine and Albert Wesker put in appearances. Iain Glen seemed to absolutely revel in being the movie's Big Bad and he played it well, though once again, this film like Nemesis, continued to stray farther from the game. Claire and Carlos' characters were very different from their video game counterparts, but I actually didn't have a problem with that. My main critique is a technical one that the director and script adviser should've caught: its the end of the world, no civilization, very little food and water, and yet Nurse Betty (Ashanti) is walking around with an fabulous weave! Seriously? No braids? Locks? Fro? But other than that, I was entertained. Still trying to warm up to Alice's telekinetic powers, but I always love seeing Milla Jovovich in an action flick. If you're a die-hard fan of the game, watch it for two new introductions to the Resident Evil monster registry, but other than that, I don't think you'll like this one anymore than the second. If you've never seen or played the game, check it out, you might like.
