Review of Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) by Ryan F — 06 Nov 2010
Resident Evil Degeneration is the model for how all video game movies should be made. This movie hits everything right, and I have very few complaints.
The thing to keep in mind about this movie is that it is a straight to DVD animated movie, that's based off of a video game.
I'm not expecting this to be as good as "The Godfather". If that's what you're expecting, than somethings wrong with this picture.
This movie is as good as it could possibly be.
Degeneration, unlike the other Resident Evil movies, and most video game movies, is true to the plot of the games. It is more like another entry in the Resident Evil Series, than a weird remake/spin off.
Fans of the games see their favorite characters return, fighting their favorite enemies. Leon S. Kennedy shoots zombies, and fans love every moment of it.
The movie has cheesy dialouge, a weak attempt at a political message, and bloody action involving zombies. All the ingredients to a good Resident Evil game.
The Animation style is good, resembling that of the games, so it retains the feel quite well. Paul Mercier, who voiced Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 4, returns to voice him in Degeneration, further adding to the feel.
One of the best parts of the movie is how faithfully the charcters of Leon and Claire were done.
Leon has his signature Jacket and Pistol from Resident Evil Four, and Claire does a good amount of shooting too.
The zombies look great, and the movie opens with a bang. Its a new take on airplane/airport horror concepts. What if there was a zombie outbreak in an airport or on a plane? How would you escape that?
The obivous response: Send special agent Leon S. Kennedy to save the day.
Degeneration has a good length, not too short and not too long, just long enough to keep the audience interested.
Although the movie's romantic subplot fails miserably, I didn't care, I got to see zombie killing, and that's all that matters.
The smooth action sequences and great animation of Degeneration make the movie good, and the story makes the movie really just another entry in the Resident Evil Series.
This is a must-see for anyone who likes Resident Evil, and its worth watching for casual zombie fans.
