Review of Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008) by Andrew C — 28 May 2010
Definitely a movie for fans of the games. I can understand why they didn't release this movie in theaters. Most people would have gone in expecting something similar to the live action movies, but this one is more like an hour and a half cutscene.
The movie started out well enough, but surprisingly enough the characters don't spend much time in the airport (all the trailers made it seem like that was the main location of the story). After they leave the airport there is a lot of talking that is not only confusing (they try to tell the entire story in about 5 minutes of dialogue) but also boring.
In the game most of the story is explained through files you find along the way and since the movie does not have this luxury the plot explanation seems rushed. Luckily the action picks up again and doesn't really die down until the end of the movie.
There's a few moments that will make fans of the game happy, such as Hunnigan's return and the oh so obvious set-up for Resident Evil 5 (we don't know exactly what TriCell is but we know they play a big part in the events that take place in that game).
So all in all if you're a fan of the games (meaning plot and characters) then you should definitely check out this movie. We get to see two old characters reunited, plus it sets up what should be an awesome story (unlike Resident Evil 4) in Resident Evil 5.
