Review of Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) by Joe W — 28 Aug 2012
It's basically Escape From New York with zombies. This movie is so incredibly stupid and it doesn't have a hint of originality what so ever. Scenes ripping of The Matrix to Escape From New York to even Jurassic Park.
There's even a line taken from Predator "We're assets, Nicholai. Expendable assets." (Sigh) Thank you, Mr Anderson. The fightscene in the graveyard reminds me of "Braindead." I was expecting the kung fu priest to appear.
But it is fun? Oh yeah. The only reason why you'd watch this film is because of Jovovich and Guillory in very revealing costumes. Love or hate this movie, you have to admit that Jill Valentine is one of the sexiest characters ever put on screen.
There's a sexy moment in her introduction where she sits down and the camera goes for an extreme close up on the side of her legs as she takes her high heels off. Best to get the widescreen version, because the full screen version, the left side of the screen goes up to her knees.
You know what the funniest thing thing is? Jill does NUTHIN' in this movie. She does shoot a few zombies and knock some zombies down, but mostly nada. Alice does all the action and all Jill does is strut around looking hot.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing. The biggest problem with this movie is that it's not scary in the slightest. If you took the swearing and violence out, it would probably get a PG-13. The editing is quite choppy, it does feel TV Movie-ish.
The lickers still look awful and Nemesis doesn't look scary. It's so cliched that the Cliche-O-Meter might explode. It's hard to make an action film with a single cliche though. But like the first one, it's a dumb, fun, brainless action flick that doesn't take itself seriously at all.
The fight between Alice and Nemesis is pretty good and the Killswitch Engage song in the credits is cool too. It's actually almost true to the games......... almost.
