Review of Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) by David G — 25 Apr 2012

Oh dear. Whereas the original Resident Evil was, in my opinion, an entertaining action flick that took the Resident Evil license in an original direction, the sequel is, without beating around the bush, a disaster.

So what went wrong? Well the abandonment of the first film's largely original spin in favour of bringing in as many characters and plot elements from the games as possible (Nemesis, S.T.A.R.S, Carlos, Jill) is a disappointment but I could have lived with it had the film been at least decent.

Unfortunately it's not. The plot's dull, the new characters are boring and one-dimensional, Alice (Milla Jovovich), the only returning character, has suddenly become a superhuman and not nearly as likable, the acting's rough (even Jared Harris is terrible) and the action is spoilt by awful stunts and wire-work.

The film looks pretty good I guess and Sienna Guillory is ridiculously hot, but they're the only real positives. I'd like to say the film's so bad it's good, but I'm not convinced.

I think it's just bad.
