Review of Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) by Jason V — 24 Jul 2012
Resident Evil: Apocalypse plays like cutscenes from the video game: I can see the writers playing the game, writing down the "cool" end-of-level bad guys and trying to formulate a story around that.
The problem is the story the find isn't new, fresh, original or inspired. It's tired, old and ho-hum. This is yet another "run, shoot and jump" story in the RE universe, only the action takes place outside with better CGI than in the first film.
Characters are introduced to be cannon fodder; none of them have a personality to speak of; and, to be honest, it's hard to care about any of it. This film immediately follows the first-the clunky exposition at the beginning makes sure we know the key points of that film-but I don't see how it expands the universe or gives us something new.
An attempt is made to model Alice on Ripley from Alien with a young girl under her wing. It's a fail since we don't care about either of them. I'm not sure if this is a real disappointment.
After all, this is a movie series based on a video game. What should we expect?
