Review of Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) by Julian T — 31 Dec 2011
At this point, I think it's safe to say the best days of the Resident Evil franchise have passed. There is nothing terribly compelling here.
The first three films were at least somewhat character driven, but 'Afterlife' offers none. Really, its just one overindulgent slow-mo fight scene after another. The horror has been completely replaced by mediocre action. There is no explanation for any of the new developments, and the elements that you figure would carry over from the previous installments are glanced over and never explored. The first 15 minutes is one of the most in your face rip-offs I have ever seen. I seriously thought I was watching 'The Matrix'. Like I said, its really just a montage of slow-mo fight scenes set to generic rock music.
The acting is not good, the story is not good, the direction is not good. All that said, its alright as a completely mindless action movie that you don't really bother having to pay attention to.
