Review of Resident Evil (2002) by Bob W — 24 May 2015
Paul W.S. Anderson delivered a bland film adaptation of a video game. I think I'd think worse of him and this film if not for the video game adaptations by the stridently awful Use Boll. Of all the video game properties out there, this is one that would have had a better shot of being an exciting and scary film.
However, Anderson manages to drain most of the life out of the story with a lot of sound and fury. Milla Jovovich is good in the lead and Michelle Rodriguez is memorable as well, but there isn't really a lot to recommend here.
The laser scene was kind of nifty and stuck in my memory, but I can't say much else in this film did. There's a George A. Romero script floating around the internet from when he was attached to this film and I can't help but think that his film would have been much more interesting and would likely have had at least some subtext.
