Review of Reservation Road (2007) by James R — 13 Jun 2008
This is a powerful examination of guilt, grief, obsession, the pursuit of vengeance, and, ultimately, redemption/forgiveness. The coincidences seem a little contrived at times, but given that the action takes place in a small community, they're not totally outside the realm of possibility.
Phoenix, Ruffalo and Connelly give understated but affecting performances. Ruffalo is especially effective in gaining sympathy for a character most might see as a monster in "real life". The "R" rating is for language and some intense scenes; I didn't find anything untoward in the realm of intensity, and although "f***" and "J**** C*****" are used, it's realistic and not to the point of irritation.
This is not a "feel good" movie; if you view it, be prepared for an emotionally harrowing experience. It is, however, worth it.
