Review of Reservation Road (2007) by Garrick J — 26 Sep 2009
The actors were the best part of this presentation, intensely emotional and focused throughout. So why wasn't the film more successful? I can only put it down to direction, editing and script....seriously lacking in all three areas.
Pace is everything in a suspense/thriller combination, and interpolated over-sentimental scenes did nothing but cool the tension and add truly dreadful pat dialogue. The premise of the story is truly interesting but it seemed as if either the writer or director made a decision not to allow us, the audience, to make our own journeys and decisions, unskillfully guiding us along his own intended path with music overlays that indicated good or bad.
We are adults, we mostly know about strong emotions in our own confused way. Good films allow us to live the story in our own, private ways.
