Review of Requiem for a Dream (2000) by Joe W — 04 Sep 2012
One of my favourite films of all time. As I mentioned on the Brazil review, I'm not the easiest person to impress. It's so disturbing and yet so hard to look away. Darren Aronofsky has created a cinematic nightmare and we thank him for that. My favourite character is Sara Goldfarb played by Ellen Burstyn. This character will do anything to get on TV and she takes so many diet pills, she destroys her image and her sanity. Her best performance in the film is when she goes berserk in the third act. "I just want to be on the show!".
Marlon Waynes' does his very best here. I think he's very proud of his performance. As does Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly.
The best part of the movie is the climax. It REALLY intense and it'll stay with you forever. If you're expecting a happy ending, look else where.
Another great scene is when Sara is hallucinating that's she's in her favourite show with an evil fridge that wants to eat her.
The use of split screens and quick cuts really do work as they bring you into the world of the film.
If you're thinking about doing heroin, watch this film and you WILL change your mind. This whole film is one big anti drug message.
Requiem For A Dream is one of those films I've seen over and over. I think I'm gonna watch it again right now.
