Review of Requiem for a Dream (2000) by Bheema D — 30 Dec 2013
An absolutely horrifying film. Which is not to say it's bad. It's actually excellent... in that it horrifies you. The acting is flawless, the music is beautiful, frantic yet melodic, and the editing sells this film like no other.
It's a cautionary tale against drug use, and in that it entirely succeeds, more so than any other such film I've seen, including Trainspotting. The only criticism I have of this movie is that it isn't as much a story as it is a cautionary tale.
The characters start out as acceptable people, fall into addiction, are seen to have lost themselves, and the movies over. It's horrifying to watch, but very little story actually happens here. That being said, the imagery that is conjured up, and the way this film is told, is of pure brilliance.
I won't forget this movie in my lifetime.
