Review of Requiem for a Dream (2000) by Carmen G — 29 Jul 2013
This is one of the most gut-punching movies I have ever seen. I watched it for the first time simply because someone suggested I do so. I knew nothing about it. While a lot of people find it hard to follow or confusing, I think that is EXACTLY how this world is.
The reality of the lives these people portray is truly captured in this film. Having had first-hand experience with some of the hard hitting topics in this movie, I cannot think of a better way to express to others what this world is like.
It does not glorify this lifestyle at all and shows the harsh, painful reality of the outcome for most that get involved. It does a wonderful job showing how harmless things can start and how they progress and how, in the end, no one really knows how in the hell they got from point A to point B.
No, this movie does NOT leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling in the end, and it shouldn't. This is reality, free from the polish that society likes to use to cover the ugliness.
