Review of Repulsion (1965) by Mauricio S — 18 Aug 2008
Icy cold Denevue was only 22 when she starred in this frightening thriller by Polanksi. Repulsed by the smell, touch and look of men, this young woman's descent into madness proceeds forwards whenever the Chruch bell strikes twelve.
Shot in b/w, Polanski's use of metaphors (rotting flesh, mouldy vegetables etc.,) as indicators of this girl's disintegration are more than effective. His minimal dialogue and lengthy silences are equally powerful.
