Review of Repulsion (1965) by Jody M — 01 May 2014
I first stumbled upon this little gem while channel surfing. I'm not going to lie; it was Catherine Deneuve that made me stop and watch. In '65, her beauty was stunning, and was used to great effect.
I call this film a classic simply because it was the first real film to probe into the inner recesses of a mentally disturbed individual who is constantly at odds with herself and her motives. This battle comes to a head when the only anchor in her life, her sister, leaves her alone to spend an extended period of time with her boyfriend.
What unfolds is the metaphorical tumble down the rabbit hole, and we are never quite sure if what we see is real or not. And what we see is quite terrifying. Little things we would never notice before become monstrous and hideous.
It's one of the all-time classics in the psychological horror genre. Highly recommended.
