Review of Repulsion (1965) by Tim S — 19 Dec 2009
Polanski, you are a crazy, crazy man. This movie is a trip! It's basically a psychological horror movie about a woman going crazy. It's not a lot unlike his other movie, The Tenant. I guess this is his female version of that film.
I love the way he slowly builds suspense, he makes such good use of the surroundings, altering them subtly so you don't even notice things have changed until it's overwhelming. Dressers start out small and look huge.
Her dead rabbit on a plate gathers more flies. The clock won't stop ticking, the water won't stop dripping...yeesh. It's beautifully shot, strong blacks, whites and shadows. Catherine Deneuve is gorgeous.
The music is perfect, creepy and wild when it needs to be, otherwise subtle. Not something I'd want to watch again and again, but I thought it was well worth seeing once.
