Review of Reprise (2006) by Trung L — 08 Mar 2009
Man, I wish I hadn't had those two glasses of wine before I saw this. The first 20 minutes is so frenetic with its constant flashbacks, back stories and voice overs that its really quite disorientating. Once the narrative settles down a bit, our hard work begins to pay off.
I've always been interested in stories about mental illness, and the plight of the central character here is handled with appropriate subtlety and complexity. The part is well written and played and the scenes where Philip reconciles with his former love, Kari, and the parallel retelling of their previous trip to Paris are the best scenes in the film.
There's not much to like about the other characters though. I can't help thinking that much of the humour and dialogue loses something in the translation. Ultimately there's not enough of an emotional hook to sustain interest and the conclusion is just blah.
