Review of Reprise (2006) by Jamie P — 01 Jun 2008
Norwegian drama that tells the story of two competitive friends, fueled by literary aspirations and youthful exuberance, endure the pangs of love, depression and burgeoning careers. It's about the sweet and bitter passing of age and the evolution of these characters.
The complex narrative with multiple characters is told in a quirky, original style. It deals with its serious issues in a very thoroughly and convincing manner, without ever becoming sentimental or depressing.
It keeps the pace all through the movie, and the balance between the humor and the horror is subtle and touching. However, the film is not entirely pervaded by its intense mood, which might make it too heavy.
Trier still has a sense of humor, and that is what gives the film its completeness. He portrays the charming silliness of the youths with empathy. The Soundtrack is amazing; from Joy Division to New Order among other cool music.
A breath of fresh air, that reminds us of the power of International films. Quirky and bittersweet.
