Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) by Matthew C — 07 Sep 2010
So Goth it craps bats, this movie is painfully silly. It feels like a high school musical put on by the staff of Hot Topics after they watched The Nightmare Before Christmas. I'm not a musical expert, but I'm fairly certain that the songs in this film are pretty awful on a technical level as well as artistic.
Stylistically, it's like an episode of Lexx, but lacks any of that show's strange charm. The actors, many of them clearly better than the material, seem embarrassed and confused by what they're doing and everything looks like a first take or dress rehearsal.
Also, the writers seem not to understand the difference between surgery and genetics. The same basic premise was handled a hundred times better in Repo Men. I guess it takes daring and guts to fail on this colossally, and in that sense, it gets a little respect from me.
But it's really awful and quickly became an endurance test which I had a hard time winning. If in fact, finishing this movie could be considered a win.
