Director Darren Lynn Bousman, whose previous work notably includes Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, really doesn't care about acting, or just has no idea what a good actor is. While bad acting is passable in a movie like Saw II, there's no excuse for it in a full blown opera.
Other than that, there's a lot working for the film. The world in which the story is set, is a visual feast for the eyes and while a couple of the songs seem a little weak, many of them are pretty strong and catchy.
As a final and almost completely worthless note, there are some really nice button up shirts in this movie!
