Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) by Forest T — 30 Mar 2012
Repo! The Genetic Opera is a schlocky musical that was contrived to attain a cult status similar to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The setting is a nightmarish future where the demand for organ transplants is so high that a "collection agent" (Anthony Head) is required for those who fall behind on their payments.
The main thrust of the plot is with the collection agent's rebellious daughter (Alexa Vega) and her rude awakening to the realities of the world around her. This film tries its hardest to be edgy and irreverent, but it reeks of fanservice and lacks any of the memorable music that made Rocky Horror an underground hit.
I would be surprised if this ultimately charmless film acquires any kind of enduring legacy down the road.
