Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) by Dave W — 12 Jun 2013
OK, well musicals are definently not my thing but if a film is done well artistically and creatively, I can at times find myself enjoying it despite it's lyrical conjectures. This film is case in point.
From the get go there is no denying that this is a full on musical piece through and through. What makes it different from other musicals is that it is a graphically twisted film that is bizzarre to say the least.
The performances are quite fun and the set pieces are very cool at times. The story is even quite good and never becomes dull. Blood and gore are prevalent throughout which is something I find quite surprising for a musical.
Sarah Birghtman was one of my favortie characters (MAG) and looked much like the real life Corpse Bride. Paris Hilton was actually quite good in this and I am thinking stage acting is where she belongs.
Terrance Zdunichs' performance reminded me of something from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Overall this is not a bad film at it's creative core. It is what it is. A dark musical that may very well become a cult favorite in years to come.
