Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) by J L — 05 Aug 2010
In the near future, worldwide epidemic of organ failure gives birth to GeneCo, a company that specializes in organ replacement surgery. Through lobbying through congress, the legalize organ repossession. (meaning that they forcibly remove the organs from your body). This is the backdrop for a story about Shiloh (Alexa Vega, a 17 year girl quarantined in the house by her overbearing father (Anthony Stewart Head) due to a "blood condition". Then comes Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino), the head of GeneCo, who comes to Shiloh with the promise of a cure.
Here's what's good about Repo! The Genetic Opera:
1)Fantastic Music: Repo! is a musical and it's freaking awesome. The industrial rock soundtrack perfectly matches the world the movie is set in.
2) Opera: An Opera is a story told through music and song. In Repo!, there is little to no talking at all. every single conversation in the musical is through song.
3) Over the top: The movie is completely over the top, all the characters are over the top, but it works.
4) Acting: The movie has some fantastic performances from the cast, including Anthony Stewart Head, who masterfully changes voices and personality at the drop of a hat with his character. Even Paris Hilton does an okay job, granted the character she plays is almost how she's like in real life, so there's no acting there.
Repo! is the rocky horror picture show of the 21st century. and over the top, ballin rock musical that withstood critics scorn and has developed a cult following among the people who watched it. I loved it, and I advise all of you to see Repo! it's hella fun and doesn't stop being fun.
