Review of Repo Men (2010) by David P — 31 Dec 2011
Great concept completely and totally wasted. I really struggle to find anything positive whatsoever to say. The lighting and cinematography were passable, but that's really all.
Despite featuring some very talented actors, every performance here is awful. Their sub-par performances are not helped by an unrealistic and dry script. I've never been a huge fan of Law, and he is very out of place in this film. Whitaker is no better. He tries, but he is just so miscast as an action star. The underrated Liev Schreiber is the only cast member who turns in a respectable performance.
The questionable acting and script bogs everything down, but the real back-breaker here is just a horrible story. Such potential for legitimate social commentary and to make a truly unique film is glossed over, turning it into a simple chase/action/gore fest. So many cliche and contrived elements; particularly the overly forced and head scratching romance angle between Law and Braga.
The only portion of the film that steps a bit outside the totally typical is the ending, which I thought was fairly interesting. All in all though, this was one big piece of crap with little to nothing positive worth mentioning.
