Review of Repo Man (1984) by David R — 04 Jun 2008
An accidental masterpiece, and a fine example of a movie that is more than the sum of its parts. It doesn't hurt that one of its parts is one of the great movie soundtracks of all times. The Spanish version of "Secret Agent Man" is worth the price of admission.
Another great part is Harry Dean Stanton who just owns the movie whenever he's onscreen. Coherent plotting is not the movie's strong point, but it makes up for it with great moments like Emilio Estevez singing a forlorn, drunken version of Black Flag's "TV Party", Oly's conspiracy theory soliloquy, and the glowing car trunk full of dead aliens that prefigures the briefcase in "Pulp Fiction".
A cult classic that has aged gracefully.
