Review of Repo Man (1984) by Arthur P — 13 May 2011
Here's a cult classic that deserves the moniker. Thoroughly odd, but possessing an energy and flair that is consistently lacking from more polished modern films of its type, "Repo Man" is evidence that films which dare to be unconventional and take chances will always be effective in a way that movies which are endlessly fussed over, focus-grouped to death, and who's only aim is to get as many butts in the seat as possible will (can) never be.
"Repo Man" is cheap, grungy and odd, but it has the feel of a bunch of people working in service of something simply because they think its funny. That is an energy that is both organic and infectious, and can't easily be manufactured.
"Repo Man" is still too silly and low-brow to call any sort of classic (other than 'cult', of course) and, like a lot of these sorts of films, the film and joke start running out of gas well before things wrap up.
But, for the most part, it's a wild and crazy ride filled with hilarious dialogue and outlandish ideas. Good times.
